HEALING HISTORY
INDIVIDUALITY EQUALITY FREEDOM
At the epicenter of Baltimore is the George Washington Monument. It should represent the freedom of all Americans. Yet Washington, our first President also owned slaves. During his lifetime Washington was troubled by the institution of slavery, but only freed the slaves he personally "owned" when he died.
In 2015 many citizens of Baltimore made recommendations to the City of Baltimore about statues condoning slavery. At that time the founder of this project, suggested the Taney statue behind the Washington Monument be removed/replaced. Taney was an advocate for slavery, even passing legislation to stop runaway slaves from becoming free, even when they escaped to "free states".
This project, HEALING HISTORY NOW continues the process of reckoning with the past and creating a more just future. The goal is to create public art and events which represent freedom for all people. We therefore reach out to everyone who has experienced slavery, sex trafficking, or enforced labor with solidarity.
Today over 40.3 Million people, mostly children, remain slaves. This is now called forced labor and includes those who have been trafficked for sex, as well as sweat shops, and class or caste based labor. They need our help.
Whether this injustice happened in the past, or is happening in our world today,
slavery must be completely addressed WORLDWIDE
to fully and finally be overcome FOREVER.
One recommendation made for this project was to design public art and events which replace the ideas and images of slavery
with those which celebrate
INDIVIDUALITY, EQUALITY AND FREEDOM FOR EVERYONE.
